Orbiting the Sun: Planets and Satellites of the Solar System (Harvard Books on Astronomy.)
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ Pr (December, 1981)
Author: Fred Lawrence, Whipple
Average review score:

Very nice book
I have read this book first time very long time ago. It was one of my first books about the planets. Since that time I was returning to it several times. I is ilustrated with very much pictures and drawings about the planets and satelites of the Solar system including the Earth. The Earth described on the same way as other planets.

The book contains all necessary data young astronomist must have including the introduction to cosmology and astrophysics. The most attractive is the chapter about the Saturn and its rings.

I'm expecting new edition of Whipple's book with new discovered facts about the Solar system.

The Original Christmas Gift
Published in Paperback by Selah Publishing Group (September, 2001)
Author: Albert S. Lawrence
Average review score:

Give this to your favorite seeker or skeptic
In a patient, engaging style, Dr. Lawrence takes the reader on a journey through the story of the birth of Jesus, exploring the background of the principals, the historical context, and the ultimate impact. He has a marvelous gift for illustrating his points with cogent examples drawn from our mutual experience. Like the best of Christian apologists, Dr. Lawrence keeps his focus on teaching and exposition; while his own point of view is clear and unequivocal, the reader's conclusion is never assumed but earned.

Yes, it's about the Christmas story, but if you're not careful, about a hundred or so pages in you may discover it's so much more. Here's hoping Dr. Lawrence favors us with a similar treatment of the Easter story!

Orphic Songs (Pocket Poets Series, No 54)
Published in Paperback by City Lights Books (May, 1998)
Authors: Dino Campana and Isidore Lawrence Salomon
Average review score:

strange and compelling
I had not heard of Campana until I saw this book while browsing recently at City Lights. His work is fantastic in the truest sense of the work, calling to mind not only the obvious comparisons of Lorca and his professed influence Whitman, but also his contemporary in Hungary, Attila Jozsef, and certainly Leopardi as well. I am somewhat nervous about some liberties that appear to have been taken with the translation (another is available, by Charles Wright, which I have not seen), but the poems are forceful enough to bleed through regardless.

Out the Window
Published in Audio Cassette by Dh Audio (January, 1997)
Authors: Lawrence Block and Bruce Weitz
Average review score:

Short and Sweet!! A 75 minute Scudder tale told well.
Out The Window is a great short Matt Scudder mystery told with precision by Bruce Weitz. Having devoured all the Matt Scudder print mysteries available and often passing them on to friends I was intrigued when I saw this Lawrence Block audiobook. I had never seen his work on tape and never seen this title in print; and I had a new vision-impaired friend that craved audiobooks. I bought it for her, but couldn't wait to listen to it myself. Weitz is the fine actor who played Mick Belker in Hill Street Blues, and I hadn't had any new Scudder since Everybody Dies. Bruce Weitz does an incredible job of telling Scudder's story of a murder investigation. He "is" Matt Scudder and he speaks to us in Matt's NY west-side ex-cop voice. He switches to other character's voices seamlessly and tells the tale fast and well. This Hell's kitchen murder mystery is early Scudder, the bourbon is flowing as fast as the story. Enjoy!

Over the Line: The Art and Life of Jacob Lawrence
Published in Paperback by University of Washington Press (May, 2001)
Authors: Peter T. Nesbett, Michelle Dubois, and Leslie King-Hammond
Average review score:

What a great book; what a great artist!!!
Jacob Lawrence, who died a year ago at age 82, was one of the great American artists of the 20th century -- or any century for that matter. I had the privilege recently of viewing "The Art and Life of Jacob Lawrence" at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, and was extremely impressed. If you can't make it to the Phillips Collection, this book is the next best thing, with more than 200 full color reproductions of Lawrence's work.

And what a powerful body of work it is, mainly -- but not only -- on the African-American experience. Themes include: slavery; escape via the Underground Railroad; heros and heroines like Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman (plus Haitian revolutionary Toussaint L'Ouverture); black migration to the North; continued persecution (lynchings, Jim Crow) well into the 20th century; the Harlem Renaissance; and more. Lawrence's style is simple (but NOT simplistic!), urgent, and direct, using inexpensive materials (cheap store-bought poster paints on hardboard -- whatever Lawrence could afford), which give new meaning to the expression, "less is more!" You get the feeling in looking at these paintings that Lawrence HAD to paint, to bear witness, and to let the world know the situation of his people.

"Over the Line" is a valuable book for many reasons. For one thing, my understanding is that these paintings, sketches, etc. have never before been published in color, or at all, in any other books on Lawrence. "Over the Line" also give you information on Lawrence's life, which was very interesting in its own right. Finally, these painting are simply a joy to look at, over and over, which this book will allow you to do. I strongly recommend that you get a hold of it!

The Oxford Companion to Politics of the World
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (March, 2001)
Authors: Joel Krieger, Margaret E. Crahan, Lawrence R. Jacobs, William A. Joseph, Nzongola-Ntalaja, and James A. Paul
Average review score:

Essential for all Political Science students
This is the bible, for lack of a better term, of political science.

I may be biased as several of the articles/definitions are contributions of my past professors, but the consistency of the writing doesn't hint that it is a compilation from many different experts.

In most cases, the contributing authors are the foremost authorities in their respective fields. That is apparent in the quality of this world-class publication.

Pacific Siege
Published in Paperback by Kensington Pub Corp (Mass Market) (March, 1984)
Author: Lawrence Cortesi
Average review score:

WW II New Giuinea air war historical naritive
A history narrative of the World War II New Guinea air campaign August 1942 to September 1942. The representation is that the combined introduction of field modified A20 attack boomers (10 50 caliber MG), the deployment of parachute delayed 27# fragmentation booms, P-38 fighters, local command initiative, low altitude (1,000 feet)tactics and weather luck lead to the destruction of massed Japanese the air resources (planes and airfields), in 4 synchronized air raids on September 22 1942. Ailed air superiority caused the reversal of the ground campaign due to supply interdiction and tactical air attacks. The conversations and emotions of participants are reported in quotes beyond the possibility of documentation. I think of this as a very good docu-drama. The limits of documentable details and the details of conversations moves this form a military history to historical drama. This may explain the classification of this book as fiction instead of history.

A real page turner of a book.

Parallel
Published in Paperback by Sterling House Pub (15 April, 2000)
Authors: Lawrence M. Zaccaro and Lawrence Zaccaro
Average review score:

Old world charm vs. Excitement of present day
This book pleasantly describes interpretations of the bible, paralleled with a families current day events.

The families fictional stories both excite and sadden you. While reading you experience so many different emotions. It allows us to draw perspective on our own thoughts with the bible, yet let us enjoy the families fictional side.

I can say I enjoyed the book, and found it hard to put down! Kudos......

The Parasite
Published in Hardcover by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (November, 1999)
Authors: Michel Serres and Lawrence R. Schehr
Average review score:

Excellent overview of the concept of parasitism
Serres the polymath strikes again, with an extensive and detailed examination of the history of the concept of parasitism in history, philosophy, science and literature. The discussion of the literary parasite is especially useful for Anglo-American readers that might not be familiar with the concept. Try to find this at a good university library, or order it online if you can.

Paroles: Selected Poems (Pocket Poets, No 9)
Published in Paperback by City Lights Books (December, 1958)
Authors: Jacques Prevert, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and Jacques Prevest
Average review score:

a wonderful little collection
This is a fantastic collection of poems. Ferlinghetti did a fabulous job translating these poems into English. Jacques Prevert is a greatly neglected French poet who spoke volumes with his verse. This bilingual edition is a great gift for any lover of poetry. Poems like Pater Noster and Flowers and Wreaths are beautiful verses. Prevert is simple in language but amazingly poignant at his best. He knew the value of directness. These poems are like little jewels of human wisdom. Human Effort, I Am As I Am, Song of The Jailer, etc. There are many highlights in this book. This often maligned, overlooked poet deserves to be reread today. Many who give this book a couple honest reads will probably be impressed by the sheer poetic wonder of this volume. I would state that because it is bilingual, students of the French language might also find value in finding the translations en face with the original. This is a great package all around.
